Some thoughts: I love this city already. That being said Ive learned two very important things. The first being any concept of street harassment I had prior to living here pales in comparison. No, sir in the white truck blocking the walk-way repetitively telling me Im beautiful and staring at me until I respond, offering me a ride and stopping traffic to the point that I have to walk AROUND your vehicle to get away from you.... AND STILL, when you pass me a few seconds later continuing with the nonsense, I am not flattered and I do not need a ride. Im uncomfortable and lost and you are not helping. Same to the five dudes after you that whistled or got close enough to whisper or honked your GD HORN AT ME (do I look like a dog in the middle of the road or a car blocking traffic? No? Didnt think so.) Youre damn creepy. All of you. Thanks for thinking Im pretty, but next time you see a pretty girl in public maybe wait until you have an opportunity to, how do I say this... ASK HER FOR HER NAME and have a conversation with her before you decide to compliment her outward appearance. Its nice to know people think youre attractive, but its even nicer when they want to get to know you as a person and not as arm candy. The second is that if you take a very talkative ten year old everywhere you go, this doesnt happen. I dont know if its because they assume shes mine, or they respect kids, or shes just too chatty for them to get a word in, but regardless, Im happy to have her as a buffer. In other news, I only took the right train 30 minutes in the wrong direction once today and only walked in a complete circle trying to get home in my neighborhood twice, so I would call that a success.
