Some time ago, somebody said they had never heard of Paulding, Mississippi. Yesterday on a trip from Union to Enterprise, I stopped in at Paulding for a couple of pictures. Paulding was one of the most historical centers in south central Mississippi back to territorial days. The first district court house contained absolutely priceless records all the way back to the beginning of things, and court houses have burned at least twice in history. I used to call at this court house working for IBM after it was rebuilt sometime in recent years. This is the 1st District court house in Jasper County, MS. There is a very historical cemetery at Paulding, which I have spent hours exploring, back in past years. A cousin once called me all the way from Idaho, ready to drive all the way to Paulding to research records. I told her not to bother, that court house had burned about a century ago. When the original old Paulding court house burned, there was a deed book on loan to the 2nd dist court house in Bay Springs. I have browsed that one, and it is truly interesting, with things like cases where Indians were being conducted to Oklahoma, etc.The Eastern Clarion newspaper was published at Paulding, for a generation, before it moved to Jackson and became the Clarion Ledger.
