Some time back a young man called me and wanted me to hear the outline of a film script he has in mind. 25 years back no young man will be ready to discuss his subject with another man even remotely connected to the film industry for the fear that his story or screenplay would be high-jacked. A general physician friend of mine came to me to put a boy in the film institute. I got him the admission and the doctor requested me to act in passing out short film in the institute. After getting his diploma from the film institute I lost contact with him till the doctor friend asked me come to the preview of a feature film by the same boy. Later I learnt that my friend the medicine man had spent several millions of his hard earned money in making this movie. The film never saw the light of day. When I asked my friend why did he not consult me with story line I was shocked to learn that the boy was worried that I might leak the story line or make film myself with the very theme. After starting a career in the film industry just as an actor’s agent and well established as free legal adviser to many directors and film makers I tried to make a film and lost money. Next I directed a film for another producer and lost my reputation. I ended up as actor and lost my face. I also found that no talent is needed for a moderate success and people accept a face in the film for no rhyme or reason as they accept a political leader who is a bit abnormal. We are three brothers in the family and all three used to walk in the front yard of our ancestral house discussing subjects for filmmaking for hours into late night. Our illustrious cousins who were academically brilliant unlike us three, used to spread news about the lunatic genes in all the three of us three to most of our near and distant relatives. All those cousins entered Administrative Service, Judiciary or medicine. I managed as mediocre actor in more than 100 films in four languages reached the level of incompetence as estimated by Parkinson’s Law, and retired. The next one became a producer and the last became a famous actor who is now addressed India’s world actor. I believe that no story line will be stolen till it becomes a proven success and by the time the story is copied and remade it makes the original conceiver even more famous.
