Some views of the Ramsgate Tunnels - including the non-public bits. The view back towards the entrance from inside the original 1863 railway tunnel (real Anderson Shelter on the left), The entrance to the ARP wartime tunnels, which stretch for over 3 miles, although only the first half mile is open to the public. The ARP tunnels are a nominal 8 x 6 but you still need hard hats. During the war there would have been a row of benches or bunks down one side and the tunnels could accommodate 60,000 people. About half the current ARP tunnel is lit - beyond the Arklow Square entrance it is dark so torches are provided. Back in the main tunnel looking away from Ramsgate with replica hessian clad accommodation on the right, at one time over 1,000 people were living permanently in the main tunnel. The lights only go on for about another 50 yards so the tunnel is closed to the public from beyond the gates. With torches at the ready we ventured into the blackness and made our way towards Dumpton, you can still see the track-bed of the narrow gauge electric railway, although all of the rails and sleepers were recovered by the RH&DR in 1965. The final shot shows the entrance to the narrow gauge railway spur tunnel that ran 300 yards through the chalk to a terminus at Hereson Road (next to the dog track).
