Someone has just raised the excellent point about what are the disincentives for owning neglected property in Danville. Heres a sample of what our neighbors are doing: Perryville has recently imposed monetary penalties on trash and weed violations, abandoned properties, and abandoned cars. Maximum fines: $500/day per violation. In Stanford, a group of citizens has started filing nuisance complaints on dilapidated properties. Code enforcement then notifies the property owner and, if the violation is not fixed, can hire someone to fix it and place a lien against the property for costs. Lexington has passed an ordinance that will effectively double the property tax rates on properties that have been vacant and blighted for more than a year. Covington has decided to become much more aggressive about foreclosing on properties with unpaid taxes or nuisance liens and is selling these properties for redevelopment. Where there is a will, there is a way.
