Someone sent me this article to point out how costly it is to house the refugee children while we are processing them for possible asylum. I agree that it is costly to provide humane placement and we should therefore support the Presidents request and expedite the funds needed to process these cases. I also believe the majority of the children will have to be repatriated back to their countries. However, if you are going to come at me with the fact that we may be spending $600,000 a day to care for these children, let me remind you that in 2007 under the Bush Administration, the Washington Post reported that The Iraq war [was] costing $720 million a day or $500,000 a minute, according to the groups analysis of the work of Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard public finance lecturer Linda J. Bilmes. To which some supporters of the Bush administrations policy in Iraq said that even if the war [was] costly, that fact is essentially immaterial. Either you think the war in Iraq supports Americas national security, or not, said Frederick W. Kagan, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. If you think national security wont be harmed by withdrawing from Iraq, of course you would want to see that money spent elsewhere. I myself think that belief, on a certain level, is absurd, so the question of focusing on how much money we are spending there is irrelevant. I submit to you that if we cannot secure our boarders, this too is a National Security issue and therefore this cost compared to the cost of arguably needless wars is reasonable.
