Something I recently shared here prompted me to write this status. Lately on my tumblr as well Ive reflagged stuff concerning race and other forms of white entitlement. The other day I was speaking to an elderly person - the time and place warranted this conversation in which my intention was to be polite and possibly put an even bigger smile on this persons face. At various parts of the convo, this person spoke about South Africa, in a way that I could very much tell this was pretty unfounded general knowledge, soo I made it a point to clarify that I was not from SA and had never been to SA. So I changed the direction of the conversation, but somehow we ended up in a place where this person thought it would be rather generous of them to enlighten me about all the ways UBC could fund my education in a manner disrespectful to my parents (*but i did LOL when I looked at them twice and then at myself ). This is where the saying God will never give me more than I can handle came to life for me. This person did not have a condescending tone per se but there was some level of certitude in their tone. Something told me to continue to steer the conversation as far from anything that had to do with Africa or my inability (according to their opinion) to cater for myself (through my parents) in a foreign land. Out of no-freaking-where So how was the apartheid?. Wait what? Trust that the response I gave was not me but God because He knows (and if you know me) there are so many others things I wanted to say. Your colour doesnt matter to me as much as my blackness seems to relay a story of my life - one that I did not tell you. I am not inciting any negative behaviours towards anyone….Im not trying to start a revolution but seeking to remind and highlight the fact that racism is still very much alive and some individuals are blissfully ignorant. #everydayracism can be as subtle as you saying holla holla or as blunt as you asking a 20year old how the apartheid was #nologic #pureignorance
