Something Ive noticed in the time Ive coached people: a lot of people get frustrated, because they have a hard time understanding how a particular concept works; more specifically, how they can take a theory (like mindful eating) and apply it to their life. The funny thing is, I just keep addressing whatever issue needs to be worked on, but with different expressions or analogies... and eventually, they say, OH! I get it now!!! Last week, I asked a client to keep a food journal that didnt only include what she ate, but also, Any important circumstances (i.e. workplace temptation) or emotional events (i.e. stressed out because ________) that might have influenced her decisions. While she seemed to understand the concept as it was, one day I sent her a reminder text saying, Dont forget to include any Ah-Ha moments that would be revealing to you or helpful for me. The specific phrase, Ah-Ha moments, seemed to help her better understand the whole point of this exercise (and lucky for me, she actually made a BIG list of interesting observations under a heading that read -- you guessed it -- Ah-Ha Moments, which is gonna make it a lot easier for me to figure out how to best help her). The point = dont get upset if you dont understand something right away. Seek another source that explains the same concept in different words, or (even better), try to put it in words YOU would use. This will help you understand concepts on a deeper level and take action with them. Make sense? Try it! :)
