Something needs to be done! This is no longer an epidemic but, a pandemic! As a recovering addict myself, this article has sadden me. Painkillers and heroin use are killing off our loved ones everyday. Being strung out for years on this crap, I myself have had enough! Sick and tired of being sick and tired. Wasting my life away. Even when I was getting high, I didnt enjoy the high anymore. I was just using to feel normal. The feeling you get coming off painkillers or heroin is like having the flu ten fold. Its not something I wish for anyone to experience. When feeling this way you will do anything, and I mean ANYTHING to get your next fix. You will lie. You will cheat. You will steal. You will put your life in danger and not even care. You will hurt your loved ones, and may I add not intentionally. This is something so powerful it will own your life and change your morals and values right around in the blink of an eye. This drug is the devil himself sucking the life right from your soul. Im putting this article out there because I feel obligated to make a change. To help addicts amongst myself before its to late for them. Now theres not much you can do for an addict unless they really want to get clean for themselves but, there is hope. There always is! This shit is out of control and something needs to change. Our prison systems are over crowded with addicts that dont belong there and so are our hospitals. No addict should be left untreated. This is a serious mental illness. A brain disease. Do hospitals and insurance companies turn away someone dieing from cancer? No, they dont. They get the proper treatment and a chance to survive and overcome their disease. Im sick and tired of watching friends slowly kill themselves. I have no control over their decisions to use but at least I can offer my help and guidance and maybe make a difference in their life. As a recovering addict I will never give up on myself or other addicts looking for help. I will contribute to finding ways to help addicts receive the proper long term treatment as needed. God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
