Something they dont tell you in this article is that highway funds are being used to build bike paths and for other non-critical infrastructure projects. Now that gas prices have fallen we can probably expect a state level push for an increase in gas taxes. Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) like NOACA spend about 1/4 of the money they get just administering the MPO, paying some very generous salaries to APPOINTED individuals that get to act like Santa Claus in deciding how to spend that gas tax revenue and on what projects. Here in NE OH there is way too much emphasis on public transit. That arrangement is highly political- the middle man needs to be cut out- let the money return to each countys engineer, who is ELECTED rather than APPOINTED. Except for Cuyahoga County, where they made their engineer an appointee.
