Something very disturbing happened to me today while visiting my grandmother in her nursing home. A very old black woman was sitting next to us, for the most part minding her Ps and Qs. Judging by her blank stare, I assumed she was in her own world, unaware of my existence. My grandmother and I were exchanging the highlights of our day when suddenly, the woman next to us came to. Her facial expression had changed and she now seemed very puzzled. Blinking rapidly, and scratching her chin. Something was clearly troubling her... Thats when it happened... Our eyes met and the confusion quickly left her face. I could sense that she was becoming very angry with me. Her once blank stare was now cold and sinister. What could I have done to upset this woman? Before I could ask what was the matter, the shouting began.... YOU BETTER BRING ME YOUR REPORT CARD NEGRO OR IMA SLAP YOU! I explained that I didnt receive my report card today.. She ignored my words and followed up with... SOMEBODY COME GET THIS BABY BEFORE I THROW HIM OUT THE DOOR There was no baby.. There was no door.. DONT PUT THE DOG IN THE CAR, HES GONNA SHIT ON THE SEAT! There was no dog, there was no car.... She continued to shout obscenities for quite awhile, but to me they were irrelevant. I never got over her first statement... You see, In her world, I was a young black boy returning home from school and I feel I have every right to be offended. I did not appreciate being called a negro.
