Sometimes life hands you a real mess. Sometimes its beyond heartbreaking. Beyond reason. Horrifying. That was our experience this summer, and wow did it ever take a toll. Every last bit of our goodwill, forgiveness, faith and calm was tested to the maximum. Due to the fact this involved serious legal and criminal activity of another person and investigations are ongoing I cant really tell you what this is all about, but I can say that we know things will turn out all right. Eventually. For now, its one day at a time. What have we learned so far? Well, forgiveness is not only a choice, its a journey. Many things seem to be unforgivable, especially when there isnt much distance, but I know that all hurts are caused by hurt. All crimes are the responsibility of both the individual AND the culture, the society, in which we live. My prayer - and it is the most painful and heartbreaking prayer I have ever expressed - is that we forgive those who trespass against us and that we forgive our society for confusing vengeance with justice instead of focussing on a culture of health and healing. Vengeance will eat your soul alive. Anger is excused when we are affronted, when weve been hurt, taken advantage of, lied to and so on. But I can tell you from experience that anger will only dull your connection to life. It feels present. It feels strong. It feels like you are doing something. But its really living in yesterday and robbing you of the beauty and the freedom of today. We have gone through fire. We will go through more. This is part of life. How we choose to face it, how we choose to respond - thats what makes the difference. Choose to love yourself and your loved ones enough to go to healthy places. Dont carry the guilt and pain of another person. If you can help them to transform it, to set it down, to heal, then do so. if you cant, then let it be. Be well. Be brave. This too shall pass.
