Sometimes my golden retriever looks like a seal reddit/r/aww/comments/29p82v/sometimes_my_golden_retriever_looks_like_a_seal/ • Seals are dog mermaids! • This dogs looks very overweight! • Thats because it is. Weight is a sensitive topic with pet owners and people ask why this stuff is even brought up at all in a thread meant to be cute or funny, and I think it is merely a testament to how much we love animals. We feel the need to be overly protective of them, especially since we know that its easy to become blind to something like our pets weight. Pet obesity rates are absolutely ridiculous and continue rising and keeping our pet at a healthy weight is such a simple way to add years to their life. If someone suggests that your pet is overweight, try not to get offended or brush it off...instead do a little research and find out for yourself if your pets weight is ideal. Here is a body score chart for dogs: agilityfusion/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/10-13-fatpets-bcs_chart_dogs.jpg • Exactly! Its really not that hard to keep your pets at a healthy weight. I feed my dog twice a day, 2 cups dry food in the morning and 2 cups dry food at night. She rarely gets any treats and when she does they are healthy like baby carrots, bananas, a little peanut butter, or Blue Buffalo dry snacks. She gets snacks MAYBE 2-3 times a week. She also gets to run every single day (1-6 miles depending on heat and how she is running). My wife and I make it a point that the dog gets exercise every single day no matter what. We feed her Blue Buffalo Basics food. We used to feed her Blue Buffalo Wilderness but it was too high in protein for her. My dog is a perfect example of a 4-5 on the animal weight chart. Edit: She is a purebred yellow lab. Before everyone freaks that she is a purebred we adopted her from my brother in law when she was just under a year old because they had twins and couldnt handle how hyper the dog was. Yes, my brother in law got her from a certified breeder and I got her for free from him. Growing up my family only adopted from the dog jail but this was an exception. • Pics? • Pics. • She is freaking gorgeous! I am a vet tech and I rarely get to see trim Labradors at work... They are always chubby or obese by the time they are 4. Which says a lot about the crap people give their dogs because labs are hyper as hell! • Thank you! My lab just turned 4 in April! My lab has the wife and I trained to take her out for exercise because if we dont she sits and barks at us until we do. Its rather annoying but it gets us out the door so I havent trained it out of her. Its her way of saying Im about to lose my mind because Im stuffed with energy so take me somewhere to play! • Your dog is gorgeous and its refreshing to see a labrador of all breeds looking so healthy. (: • Thanks! Labs are a high energy working breed that needs a lot of attention in order to stay a healthy weight. I can safely say my dog is the most spoiled creature I know. • I cant say for certain, but that dog may have some sort of thyroid issue, which would explain the weight. My parents have a golden that looks almost exactly the same. My parents dog weighs 120 lbs. on a good day. They take him on multiple walks every single day, and pay a boat load of money on special dog food for him. Doesnt matter. He is still huge. Nothing they can do to get him in shape. So, sometimes its not as easy as just exercising and feeding correctly. • Hypothyroidism causes weight gain by lowering the metabolism. The counter to that is simply to consume fewer calories. There is no reason for a dog with hypothyroidism to be overweight, as a person can control the dogs food intake. The reason it is a problem with people is that the person is controlling their own food intake, and the desire to eat more is more compelling than the knowledge that they should not eat more. Also the dog in the photo does not show any of the other symptoms of hypothyroidism. The skin problems are generally quite obvious with dogs. • A walk does not always equal exercise. A fat person can walk one lap around Wal Mart every day and still not see any improvements. High energy breeds need a minimum of 30 minutes of HIGH ENERGY exercise per day. A walk is not high energy. • You have literally zero clue about what youre talking about. Quit defending your parents, they are shitty dog owners and are killing your family pet. • Not according to the vet. When we switched to a lower protein food her problems cleared up almost immediately. • Good on you responsible pet owner, and glad you listen to your vet because the person right above is absolutely wrong. Dogs are not obligate carnivores and do need a balanced diet, which includes carbs. Very high protein diets for dogs may contribute to many pathologies including kidney/liver problems, obesity, electrolyte imbalances, and even some cancers. (ノ ゜∀゜)ノ(❛□❛) Know someone who uses Ebay?
