Sometimes people wonder why I say The Joker has not been played - TopicsExpress

Sometimes people wonder why I say The Joker has not been played properly in any live action film. Its a hard question to pinpoint and answer to. The Heath Ledger Joker certainly has the menace but he lacks the fun, oh sure, hes having fun but its this very blunt fun the difference between a mallet and a razor, hes too heavy handed. Sure hes disturbing in his violence and his mannerisms to some degree but its all too bombastic - he fails to be internally disquieting. The scenes of violence may shock you but he falls apart with the whole ham-fisted two barges thing. By the end hes just a messed up mess of a character. Jack Nicholson does get it closer - he has all the fun and you can see how he manages to be stable enough to have a gang of henchmen who want to follow him. The problem is that he lacks the menace, hes too much on the other side of the equation. He kills, and in a traditional Joker way, but he lacks the violence and once again, fails to disquiet. This is really where the animated Joker shines. A sophisticated psychotic who manages to put together large scale complex plans. He walks the razors edge between disturbed and outright lunacy. Anyone who has watched Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker would likely agree that the Joker hits a whole other level of disturbing with what he does to a young Tim Drake. None of the other Jokers can even hope to aspire to that. Thats the Joker who murdered Jason Todd and tortured Barbara Gordon. So sorry for you Dark Knight fans, its just not who the Joker is.
