Sometimes the best way to fix a problem at a barrel is to take the issue away from the barrel. This is especially true for young horses who might be missing the basic understanding of what you are asking of them. This will help prevent any anxiety from building at the barrel. For example, if your horse isnt coming around the backside of the barrel quite like you would like, take him away from the barrel and work him through an exercise that will increase his understanding. If youve done your job, you should be able to come back to the pattern and he will make the turn just as you had worked him away from the pattern.
