Sometimes the sadness that comes from projecting our flaws onto a loved one return to haunt us. Upon this realization the grief is immense. But even worse is when we discover that we have projected our own greatness onto another. The illusion fades and we must grapple with our own humility, on top of the particularly profound loss of disappointment. The unfortunate truth is that some people will choose smallness and cling to it as their most precious possession, no matter how much you love them and see their potential. And for this, compassion is the only cure.
