Sometimes we are so busy behind the scenes we don’t have time to - TopicsExpress

Sometimes we are so busy behind the scenes we don’t have time to tell you about our rescue work. Weve recently listed on PetRescue a very beautiful lucky girl named Macey, who came into care quite a while ago. When macey arrived I was in shock, even before I saw her. I smelt her before I got a chance to peer into her cage. Macey had been surrendered by her owners because they couldnt afford medical treatment for their dog, and were going to dump her at the rspca if she wasnt taken immediately. Macey had been living in agony for months, suffering from a horrendous skin condition that sadly if treated correctly when it first occurred, could have been cured with very little cost. Maceys fur had fallen out, her skin was so thickened and red her fur simply couldnt grow back, she was covered in a thick layer of what I can only describe as yeasty sludge and was bleeding in parts from her scratching at her skin to try and alleviate the pain. Macey was aggressive and fearful, her aggression was based on pain, every touch, every movement, caused her agony. She wouldnt leave her crate, she could barely walk to go to the bathroom, she couldnt be lifted up or cuddled without her lashing out, and we certainly didnt blame her for that as we could see, and smell, the shear pain she was enduring. Driving Macey to the vets I had to keep the windows open in the car, the smell was overpowering not only from her skin but from her ears. Maceys ears were so swollen with thickened skin and infection, she could barely hear and we were concerned her ear drums would be perforated, sometimes some of the pus could drain out, but mostly it was trapped inside. I took At the vets, after she was muzzled, the first thing to do was give her a pain relief injection! Macey was given more injections, more pills, more ointments and shampoos, a medicine cabinet full of things to treat her. Once the pain relief injection had kicked in she able to be given a cold bath, the relief on her face was heart breaking, her skin was so inflamed it was literally radiating heat, so a cold water bath was the best thing she had ever experienced in the last few months. Once her skin had become less swollen, it became apparent that Macey had another issue, her leg had been broken at some point and a metal pin had been placed in to try and heal the break, the pin was now out of position and you could see and feel it through the skin. Months went past of rehabilitation and constant baths and ointments and medications, we began to see a real dog underneath the flaky, oily, sludgy exterior, we began to see a brighter, happy, bubbly girl and every day she showed more and more signs of being willing to love and receive love. Macey flourished, it was a long long process, but she discovered that life wasnt meant to be filled with pain and fear, life was meant to be spent scoffing food, running around the backyard, rolling in possum poop, doing zoomies down the hallway, making friends at the dog park, stretching out on the back of the couch, stealing socks and playing keepings off, burying herself under blankets and generally being a bed hog. Macey moved into foster care with an AMAZING family so they could continue to help her socialise with strangers and she had her first trip to the beach and played with kids during sleep overs! She went through an operation to remove the metal in her leg, so she could run around more easily and be more comfortable. Then it came to time to list her for adoption! It’s been a loooong road for Macey, she has blossomed so much, she has learnt so much, and she is one of the reasons why we will never give up. Here was a petrified dog living in agony, in a family home. She wasnt from a puppy farm, or a hoarder, or a pound, she was a family dog and she was left to suffer because her family probably didnt realise there are organisations out there that can and do help. The reason Im sharing Maceys story with you is because I truly believe education is the most important step in stopping animal abuse and cruelty, and that even though animal rescue can be filled with horror stories it can also be filled with stories of love and dedication. Macey may have had a horrific past, but she has one absolutely wonderful future to look forward too! We count our blessings we were able to help our Macey Moo, and are so very proud of her achievements, she’s one stunning girl who has overcome so many hurdles and is about to begin the next chapter of her life. We love you Macey Moo and cant wait to find you your forever home!
