Sometimes women experience a temporary mass loss of hair, called telogen effluvium, that is induced by some event that tips your hormones, such as weight loss, having a baby, going on and off of birth control pills or acute stress, Reed said. Usually your hair recovers once the event has passed, but if youre genetically disposed to androgenic alopecia, an episode of telogen effluvium can kick-start your path to hair loss earlier, Reed said.
