Son Peter has made the news again! Please note the one-skid landing... like standing on one foot while juggling! On July 6, 2013, at approximately 2005 hours, CHP helicopter-32 (H-32) was requested by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office and Napa Co. Fire Department to assist with the search for a lost mountain biker in Robert Louis Stevenson S.P. near the area of the Palisades. A 42 year old male resident of Calistoga was riding on the Oat Hill Mine Trail and apparently grew dehydrated. He complained of cramping, abdominal pain and a possible seizure. He contacted help through his cell phone while his riding companion continued towards Calistoga in search of help. The crew of H-32, Pilot/Officer Pete Gavitte, Flight Officer/Paramedic Whitney Lowe and Flight Officer Tony Jackson, flew to the area where the party was reportedly on marked trails waiting for help. After searching a large area, and assisted through the party’s phone contact with a Napa deputy who relayed his information via radio, the party was located off trail in steep terrain and moderate brush. A one-skid landing was made due to the remote location and terrain and FO/Paramedic Lowe was inserted to evaluate the victim. After refueling, H-32 extracted both crewmember and the victim who suffered mild exposure. The party was flown to a waiting AMR ambulance in Calistoga. The CHP’s Golden Gate Division operates two helicopters and two airplanes from the Napa County Airport. Both helicopters are equipped for Night Vision Goggle operations, Forward Looking Infared (FLIR) and they have 50 million candlepower nightsun spotlights. The CHP helicopters have long line and hoist capabilities for daylight rescues where landing is not possible or feasible. The unit operates 24/7 and patrols approximately 6,923 square miles that incorporates a residential population of more than 7, 150,000 people.
