Song of Solomon Devotional Day 17: Purity & Singleness of the Bride’s Passionate Love for her Lord - Chapter 4 v 7 & 9-11- “You are altogether beautiful, my darling, And there is no blemish [or spot] in you. You have ravished my heart, My sister, my spouse; You have ravished my heart With one look of your eyes, With one link of your necklace. How fair is your love, My sister, my spouse!... Your lips, O my spouse, Drip as the honeycomb; Honey and milk are under your tongue; And the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.” The key element of the king’s admiration for his bride is her singleness of passion, her purity of devotion. She is ALTOGETHER LOVELY having NO SPOT or BLEMISH; she ravishes his heart with ONE LOOK of her eyes. The dual meaning conveyed in the original Hebrew is that the king’s heart skips a beat every time she simply glances at him AND that her gaze ravishes his heart because she holds him as the singular focus of her eye; she looks upon him as upon no other and sees nothing else but him when she so much as glances in his direction. Her devotion is SINGULAR! The Church is the perfection of beauty and her single desire, the passionate longing of her heart, is for Christ alone. Thus her love is fair, her lips drip with sweet praises, the vocabulary of faith and devotion, and even her garments, her outward appearance, radiates purity and permanence of character. Beloved, beware of attachments that defile. Keep yourself, your family, your ministry PURE before God. Let NOTHING encroach upon your intimacy and devotion to Christ. What God desires to do in and through YOU is a work so PURE, so HOLY, so POWERFUL that many, even among those who profess allegiance to Christ, will reject and resist it at first because your singular devotion exposes the empty mockery of their compromising self-interested attachments to this world. (Be ready for the conflict.) But if you will guard your heart, defend the faith and stay the course, God will give you the desires of your heart: intimacy with God, liberty from controlling passions, addictions and past hurts, AND the authority to deliver a people out of bondage into the marvelous light of Christ. Remain faithful, stay the course, pay the price. Be strong and very courageous. Remain singular in your devotion to Christ. Amen?
