Soooooo...recovery is a multifaceted endeavor. So many changes, for family and friends, so many dimensions. Nothing is as it was for the mom who learns of the medical issues at play and the causative nature of what the rest of the world would consider benign and downright necessary substances. As Noah emerges and the autism recedes---we often have moments where the emergence of language and a properly functioning brain intersect with the delicate and highly sensitive nature of the autist. For example, Noah still perseverates intensely on fountains. While we have successfully limited his fountain time it is still very much a part of our everyday...a necessary part of everyday. The other day, a particularly hard day for him because Id placed several demands on him...he threw a fit because I drove too quickly past one of his favored fountains. I was exhausted and done. And I talked to him like a neurotypical child. Enough! I have had enough. You will stop screaming, you will get back in your seat and you will put your seatbelt on. You are better than this Noah. Knock it off. He protested and began grunting, struggling to find the words. MOM GOD IS IN THE FOUNTAIN! GOD IS IN THE FOUNTAIN! I turned around and went back. They know things we do not know and sometimes we need to listen to them.
