“Sophisticated” worship is a stench in the nostrils of God. Sophistication is man’s attempt to deny the severity of our fallenness and a pretense to disregard the magnitude of our sin-broken condition. That’s why King David said “I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes” (1Sam. 6:21,22). When we worship, we are not only acknowledging the great, holy, and perfect condition of Jesus, but declaring the defective, corrupt and shattered state of our own. Authentic worship is our acknowledgement that we need a Savior – not just once, but daily, as long as we live on this earth; Authentic worship involves our confession that we are willingly rejecting the selfish condition we inhabited in our sin, to move further into the transformed condition we are called to in Christ. To do anything less is to diminish the greatness of the sacrifice of the cross.
