Sore or Rubbed Mouths? We have had a lot of customers who are having problems with their horses mouths this year, so here are some ideas to help if you have this problem: Firstly, make sure your bit fits correctly. Too small and it make pinch and rub, too large and it may slide around to rub Is your bit doing the correct job? For example, by using a mild snaffle you might not have enough control and need to pull and drag to stop causing rubbing. A relatively stronger bit may avoid this. Does your bit suit the conformation of your horses mouth? For example, a horse with a large tongue such as a cob or a warmblood might be better with a more shaped mouthpiece. Are your horses teeth sharp? Pink skinned horses might be more prone to rubbing. A more fixed bit may be the answer as it might give less movement, for example a fixed eggbutt rather than a loose ring. Rubber or gel bit guards may help. Acavalla gel bit guards turn inside the mouth to protect the lips. Remember bit guards are NOT dressage legal so dont forget to take them off for any competitions.. There are several preparations to help heal sore mouths or protect them. If you are competing under FEI rules dont forget to check they have no illegal ingredients. Make sure you let any sores or rubs heal properly. Lastly, if you can add to this please let us know. We always welcome new ideas
