Sorry Facebook, but I really need to go on a rant right now. I am so sick of people rolling their eyes at the word “equity”. There was a time not too long ago when I wasn’t afraid of expressing my views on equity, on calling shit out. It wasn’t until I began working in oppressive environments that I was forced to feel like I should just stay quiet and appear “politically neutral”. Part of this was the lack of support from apparently anti-oppressive environments, and feeling as though my politics were sub-par and therefore not worth expressing. Such times I’ve put behind me, but the feelings of inadequacy still follow me, even with the progress and support that’s brought me here today. However, I’m not here in self-pity, but rather in self-care. And I have a few words to say to those who still have the audacity to make demeaning comments not only towards the work of the SCSU (which despite personal reservations I will always uphold respect), but the work of my brothers and sisters and others that continue to push through despite your BS. Whether you agree or not, treating everyone with “respect” and “equality” doesn’t eliminate systematic inequities. It doesn’t reverse wage gaps. It doesn’t reverse the damage of residential schooling systems or acknowledge our settlement or breaching of Indigenous treaties. It doesn’t reverse the erasure of racialized identities. It doesn’t end discrimination of the queer and trans community. It doesn’t help marginalized communities. It does help the minority. The same minority occupying current states of power. Equality cannot be reached without equity. Y’all needa stop getting so scared of the word and recognize your damn privileges. This goes for ALL identities, because inequity refers to a failed SYSTEM, not a failed PERSON. And finally, for anyone going through a similar experience, you are not alone. Im MIA 99% of my time in this job (Im sorry), this is not something I like but is often required to do the job youve asked me at the SCSU. However my door is ALWAYS open and Im always always one message away. 1love
