Jamesetta WORK Obituary WORK, Jamesetta Elizabeth (Betty) November 25, 1932 - February 17, 2014 Betty passed away peacefully on February 17th at Holyrood Manor in Maple Ridge where she had been a resident for a number of years since her stroke. She was predeceased by her parents John and Elizabeth Work of White Rock, B.C. and her elder sister Mary Fullerton of Coquitlam, BC. Survived by her younger sister, Myrtle Nelson, of Kamloops and her three sons John, Jim and Raymond. She is also survived by her brother-in- law, Don Fullerton, formerly of Coquitlam now of Maple Ridge. She is also survived by Marys three children Patti, David and Jim and their families. Raised in White Rock, B.C., Betty was a member of Semiahmoo Secondarys first graduating class (1941). Her grad caption read future star of the Metropolitan Opera. She was a trained opera singer and was, for many years, principal soloist at Vancouvers Ryerson United Church under the direction of Dr. Hugh McLean. Betty was a career elementary school teacher serving her students for over 45 years. Her first teaching position was in a one room school west of Williams Lake, in B.C.s Cariboo where her first duty of each day in winter was to light the wood stove both to heat the classroom and to thaw the ink that had frozen over night. After that she taught at Elgin School in Surrey when it also was a one room school. She taught for many years at Sir Richard McBride Elementary School in New Westminster where she is remembered well for sharing her love of choral singing and opera. She took many hundreds of students to their first opera performances. In retirement, Betty continued to serve musically as choral director of the Dogwood Songsters in Coquitlam. She also served as national anthem solo singer at many Canadian New Citizens ceremonies. Cremation and no service by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross. It is expected there will be a family gathering at a later date.
