(Sorry but here comes a mini rant) Really NC?! Really??? Im the LAST person who will ever support Obama or his administration ...EVER. But Common Core is NOT.THE.PROBLEM with education in America. Common Core is a basic outline of things students must learn in order to eventually graduate. (Whats wrong with that??) Its NOT a curriculum. States and local districts along with teachers individually develop local curriculum. Common Core is great! If you (parents) have a problem with what your child is learning...then its not common core youre mad at, its the local school district who has developed their curriculum. As a former educator of military children...I can tell you first hand that we NEED a common standard across the US...it is completely insane that a child from Idaho can move to NC and be tested and held to standards that his state was never held accountable for teaching. The PROBLEM is standardized testing. Period. Teachers are forced to spend more time teaching testing strategies than they spend time actually teaching...if highly qualified teachers were given the freedom to teach the common core outline in a way modified to their students learning styles without the stress of losing their jobs because of the numbers...maybe, I dunno, teachers would be PASSIONATE again and take pride in continuing their own education. A passionate teacher = excited/motivated students = students learning. WHY does this seem so difficult for the dept of education to understand?! I completely understand that testing is necessary to monitor progress and adjust teaching & ensure that students are retaining info...Im not saying to stop testing completely...Im saying that people need to put their energy into the real problem in education... #formerteacher #keepcommoncore #endstandardizedtesting
