Sorry for the delay Wai Vatu & Sam Rabuku. I was busy downloading but here goes. Nomudrau short story. Enjoy :) Happy Anniversary!!! Do pliz tell us about ur first date: Well, it was one of the most memorable and romantic nights of my life. After a few weeks of stealing glances at each other at the bean carts, he finally approached me one Wednesday afternoon and asked me if he cud buy me a glass of wainimoli. I remember my throat drying up and I cud not for the life of me utter a single word so shyly I nodded and blushed in agreement. Wen he passed me the glass of wainimoli, our eyes locked and his fingers brushed against mine. I remember the quickening of my heartbeat and I swear he cud almost hear the palpitations. There was instant chemistry. For the next half hour we sat by the benches totally oblivious to the choking smell of the exhaust fumes and the deafening sounds of the hooting buses. It seemed as if we were stuck in that sublime moment totally muted and oblivious to the frenzied Suva bus station. He expressed his desire to court me and I agreed to a date. Our very first date. He picked me up on a cool October evening at about 7.30pm from my place at Jeetu. I was anxious in the lead up to our Friday nite 7.00pm date. He picked me in a taxi and he said he made sure it was a gas taxi so I would have a lot of leg room. And he even opened the door for me. Isa that was a time wen chivalry was still practiced and there were no e-ticketing and fires in the buses. Anyways, somehow he could see that I was quivering and he held my hand and said to me “Babe don’t be nervous. E set tu.”. I smiled reassuringly and replied “Sega au sega ni nervous thaita. I’ve been standing on the road from 7pm. Au sa liliwa ga.” He put his arms around me and I felt warmer almost instantly. Being the gentleman he is, he took me first to dinner. He even opened the door again for me wen we got off in front of the Harbour Garden Restaurant in Nabua. I felt like princess. He locked his hands into mine and escorted me into the fish and chips shop. We shared one serve of fish and chips and it tasted like ambrosia as we fed each other a chip at a time. We cud have sat there for all eternity if it wasn’t for that Fijian lady that piped up from behind the counter “Drau veicai keimami sa via suka i vale!” After having the door of the restaurant thudding behind us, hand in hand, he escorted me across the road. I asked him, “Bubs wea we going?” He looked charmingly at me and said “We’re going for candlelight drinks, my sweet”. As we turned into Yarawa Road, my thoughts began to wander as I started to picture white picket fences, 2 kids playing in the yard, a cute dog, and even a rainbow over the house. Could he be the one I wondered to myself. No. No. No, my conscience told me. You’re far too young to be thinking of such things. U’ve only just started at the garment factory and not ready to settle. Plus u still have hopes of hooking up with that guy that gave u a taki at Reload last weekend. No. No. No. Stop taki iko. Interjecting my thoughts, I heard him say, “A penny for your thoughts my sweet”. I shook my head coyly but really I was trying to shake those notions outta my mind. We came to a stop, just after the turn into Yarawa Road opposite the Shop & Save Supermarket carpark exit. Oh goodie, I thought, he’s stopping a taxi. Wea we’re going next? He held both my hands on that sidewalk, looked into my eyes and for a second I cud swear he cud see right into my soul then he said “our candlelight drinks awaits my sweet” as he beckoned me into the dimly lit Pravin’s Grog Shop. I moved into his Wailea home the very next day and we’ve been together ever since. That was also our very last date.
