(Source: Times of India) Its true that Modi presided over appalling riots in Gujarat in 2002. However, he is not the only figure in contemporary Indian politics to have presided over riots. Moreover, one reason for his appeal is surely the poor performance of UPA-2. Inflation, lack of jobs and pervasive corruption rankle in the minds of voters. A majority of them arent seduced by anti-minority jibes. If anything, they are persuaded by the argument that parties that swear by secularism have done precious little for the welfare of minorities. Lack of development too can lead to the flourishing of dangerous identity politics. Modi alone cant be held responsible for all this. Once should factor the shift in Modis positions away from the sangh parivars pet obsessions. His recent statement that he would prefer to lose rather than seek votes on the basis of religion is a sign of this. If he does become prime minister, liberals should trust democratic forces to ensure that Modi doesnt turn authoritarian or majoritarian. Indias Constitution has stood the test of time. It is too vast and diverse a country to be turned into a Hindu Pakistan.
