Soviet beauties In an earlier post, I had remarked uncharitably that Soviet women came only in two sizes- ballerinas and bulldozers and that to our misfortune, we encountered only the latter. That was not fully true. We did meet some attractive ladies during our stay in Odessa. Two interpreters worked with us; Sasha, a cynical young man who had been to BHEL Hardwar earlier and knew Hindi and Tanya, a petite and nice looking Ukrainian lass Tanya who was an amateur gymnast. She playfully arm-wrestled Kali, Sood and me, defeating us hands down. She informed us that her boyfriend also was a gymnast. That put paid to all mischievous ideas! We used to go for lunch to a kiosk which served among other dishes Azerbaijan Pilaf, a passable rice and meat dish. A large and attractive Ukrainian country girl attended to us usually. She had a hourglass figure (72-48-72) and was well over six feet in height. The beautiful Amazon was extra kind and attentive to the three Indians. Once, I saw a muscular guy struggling to bring an urn full of tea to deposit it on the floor near her. She picked it up with her left hand while talking to us across the counter. We almost died in admiration. What I found disconcerting was, otherwise nice looking girls had gold caps in their teeth, ruining otherwise lovey smiles. When I commented on this, Tanya told me that it was a fashion fad. Some girls had caps put on even if they had no dental problems. Like ladies from some parts of India (not mentioning where, for fear of being lynched!} most Russian women seemed to put on weight as they grow older. The beautiful and stately young ladies become rotund babushkas by the time they turned forty. A great pity.
