"Spending all of the money sent by family abroad on trivialities. Most middle-class Filipino families have one or two members working abroad who probably sends as much as they can to their families left here. The idea is that their sacrifice would be enough to better the lives of those they love. In this context, it is disturbing to see, again and again, the complete lack of respect those same family members have for the sacrifices embraced by their loved ones, most notably by the fact that they do nothing but spend the money sent to them on trivialities and useless trinkets. How to be a better human being: Use the money from abroad to better your lives. For kids, that means studying hard and making sure you graduate from college. For the spouse, that means saving as much as you can. You can use the savings to start a business, or kick start a retirement plan. The loved one who left did so because he or she wanted a better future for you. Now it’s your turn to work your ass off for that better future."
