::: Spending on one’s own family is more important than giving charity ::: Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A Dinar (a unit of currency during the Prophet’s time) you spend in Allah’s way, or to free a slave, or as a charity you give to a needy person, or to support your family, the one yielding the greatest reward is that which you spend on your family.” [Narrated by Muslim] Points of Benefit: This Hadith (Prophetic tradition) demonstrates the importance of spending on one’s family. Although a Muslim is supposed to give lots of charity, his primary responsibility remains to ensure sustenance for his family members. In Islam, it is an obligation for the husband to earn money so that he can provide for his wife and children through this income. It is important, however, to remind that a person should not forsake giving charity altogether in the pretext of providing for the family. A good Muslim gives the due rights to everyone.
