Spent a good part of the day in the field today utilizing organic weed control methods. It occurred to me that there are many people that do not have these skills. If you have spoken with me, you know I am passionate about helping others grow their own food. So here is the deal. I am willing to teach classes on organic weed control methods. I can state with great humility that I posses advanced knowledge in this endeavor. The classes will be divided into three phases. Each phase will be available for only $50.00 per person. This will include refreshments and a light lunch. Phase 1. Introduction to basic hoe use. Students will be taught proper usage and posture for organic weeding. The pros and cons of a scuffle hoe versus a chopping hoe. Proper care and maintenance of a hoe, including sharpening. Classes will be 4 hours on Saturday afternoon and 8 hours on Sunday. On Saturday each student will be receive individual instruction and suggestions to improve their technique. On Sunday students will be allowed to operate by themselves. I will observe students and write a final critique. Graduates will receive a handwritten certificate suitable for framing. Phase 2. This phase introduces machinery to the students. Students will be instructed in the proper usage of a rototiller. Instruction will include basic maintenance and fueling, use of safety equipment and workplace ergonomics. Class times and curriculum will be the same as Phase 1. A printed certificate suitable for framing will be issued at the end of the class. Phase 3. This phase is not for the timid!!! Students will learn how to use a weed-trimmer. Students will receive instruction on the proper selection of attachments for the weeds needing removal. After initial instruction students will be introduced to a game I have learned to enjoy over the years. Late in the season I play I know there are plants in there somewhere. Students needing plant identification skills will be coached one-on-one. If you are lucky and conditions warrant, students will be taught propane flame weeding. The bravest will be introduced to home-made Napalm. Weeds cannot be shown mercy! I have always believed that the best way to show you have mastered a skill is to teach it. Phase three students will need to recruit students and and shepard them through Phase 1. After completing this step, students will receive a certificate that identifies them as Advanced Instructors stapled to their own scuffle hoe. Advanced Instructors will be given unlimited access to my fields to teach their own classes. Advanced Instructors will need to graduate one Phase 1 class per year to maintain their status. Dont wait to long to sign-up! There is sure to be lots of interest. Roger -
