Spent most of the morning at the doctor with Mom. Just a check - TopicsExpress

Spent most of the morning at the doctor with Mom. Just a check up, and everything looks great; physically shes still a tough old bird. the rest of the morning, and now into the afternoon, Ive spent doing something I despise, but lately cant seem to stop doing: reading the news. Im not going to go into which side Im on in the big Republican/Democrat debate; the friends who need to know already know, and for the rest, it doesnt matter to what Im going to say. Regardless of the side youre on, everybody seems to want to compare the Other Side to George Orwells book 1984. I can see that, granted. I can also see much stronger comparisons to his less well-known book, Animal Farm. Then there is The Handmaids Tale and Fahrenheit 451, and lots of other books springing to mind each time I read the news. But when I look at the political correctness thought control among the hardcore on the one side, and theocratic lockstep among the hardcore on the other, what goes through my mind is another story, one that my mother put into my hands when I was around 11 or 12, and one that scares me a LOT. Its this one: tnellen/cybereng/harrison.html For my non-reading friends, its a short story, very short. Take a peek at it, and I defy you to tell me it doesnt send a little frisson of terror up your back.
