Spoiler warning: Im about to discuss plot points of Man of Steel and also Dragon Ball Z. Stop reading if you dont want either of those things spoiled for you. Is it safe? OK. Man of Steel is the most accurate Dragon Ball Z live action movie ever made, and here is why. First up: Superman is a hell of a lot like Goku. Theyre both among the very few survivors of their exploded home planets. Due to a number of factors such as gravity differences and genetics, theyre naturally stronger and overall more physically capable than the humans they live among. They come to earth in a simple space pod, sent by their parents or at least their father. They both have no memories of their former lives, and neither quite understands that theyre even an alien until the are older and are told. They are both at heart kind and just. Theyll fight when they have to and do what needs to be done but neither has an inherent desire to do harm for harm sake. Both have human names and also names that were given to them by their race. The latter names only come up when dealing with others of their race. Now, into more of the meat of Man of Steel. Both are indirectly responsible for the deaths of their surrogate father figure. Goku when, as a child he turned into a giant ape at the sight of the moon and stomped Gohan. Clark when, as a teenager, he didnt go back to save PA Kent or even insist on saving the dog instead of pa. Both are indirectly responsible for the attack on earth lead by their alien kin. Raditz (and later Nappa and Vegeta) come looking for Goku. Zod, Faora, and Nam-Ek come looking for Superman. The attacking aliens even match up in a similar way. Often Faora (the smallest, like Vegeta) Is paired up with Nam-Ek (the largest, like Nappa) while Zod does many things solo similar to Raditz. They have the ability to grow their own minions. The kryptonian birthing machine or the saibaman seeds. When they fight, they go toe to toe with various martial arts, flying, mostly one on one combat, occasionally duo attacks, and lasers. They blast so many lasers around and most miss their mark. Theres considerable property damage. A hero has to sacrifice his life to take down a villain. In Dragon Ball Z Goku died to ensure Raditz died. In Man of Steel that army guy took down Faora with him. There were even moments where the combatants were standing and screaming at each other. And boy did the villains sure like to gloat. It sure as hell was closer to Dragon Ball Z than Dragonball Evolution was. I guess the only real main difference was that, while both had lots of property damage with their battles, Goku was generally pretty good at leading the fight to some abandoned wasteland instead of the middle of a city. Wait, does that mean Goku is a better Superman than Man of Steel Superman? And in turn, Man of Steel Superman is a better Goku than Evolution Goku?
