Spoke with parent of new student today after an extracurricular - TopicsExpress

Spoke with parent of new student today after an extracurricular drama class I am teaching for 5-6-7-8 graders after school. She was criticizing the loose format of the class and I was explaining my rationale for allowing creativity to flourish. SHe told me that her sons had just come from a charter school where they were taught to sit with your hands at your side without comment. Period. Obviously not my style. The talk went on and she mentioned that she lives by our high school. I told her that my kids go to that high school. She shuddered. I asked her why and she proceeded to tell me that HER kids wont go to that school. I told her that there are great kids there and that the teachers are excellent . . . she shuddered again and told me she wanted her sons to go to school with better people than they have there. That she has high standards. Her expectations are greater than what they can deliver. She wants her sons surrounded by good people. . . . I . . . was . . . stunned. She wants her kids to be with better people, but what kind of example is she? Better than WHAT? Regular people? Hispanic people? Non-filthy rich people? It is hard not to get mad at a parent. What should I have said? I know what I DID say, and needless to say, I was appropriate, but how would YOU respond to such an ignorant and racist remark?
