Sports Fast-Break for FRIDAY, AUGUST 16 WHEN IT MATTERED: HOLLIDAY, CARPENTER LIFT CARDS OVER BUCKS The St. Louis Cardinals moved to within two games of the Central Division leading Pirates after knocking off Pittsburgh 6-5 in 12 innings Thursday. Matt Holliday hit a game-winning single and Matt Carpenter finished with four hits to pace the Cards. In other NL action, the Reds are now 2 ½ games behind the Pirates after clipping the Brewers 2-1, the Giants scored three in the top of the ninth to upend the Nationals 4-3, and the Mets scored two in the eighth and one in the ninth to best the Padres 4-1. TAMPA TWO: RAYS DRAW WITHIN 2 OF RED SOX IN AL EAST The Tampa Bay Rays now sit two games out of first in the AL East after marginalizing the Mariners 7-1 and the Red Sox falling to the Blue Jays 2-1. Out West, the A’s are one and a half back of the idle Rangers after blanking the Astros 5-0, the Tigers lead the AL Central by 6 ½ following their 4-1 victory over the Royals, the Twins earned a 4-3 walk-off win over the White Sox, and the Angels survived Alfonso Soriano’s four-hit night and doubled up the Yankees 8-4. TAPE DELAY: MLB SET TO EXPAND INSTANT REPLAY NEXT SEASON Major League Baseball has taken a closer look at its existing instant replay policy and has decided to add a very significant new wrinkle. Commissioner Bud Selig announced Thursday managers will be allowed one challenge over the first six innings of a game and two from the seventh inning until the completion of the game starting in the 2014 playoffs. Challenges not used in the first six innings will not carry over, and a manger who wins a challenge will retain it. COLLEGE CREDIT: PETERSON OK WITH MANZIEL, OTHERS GETTING PAID Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson feels Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and any other NCAA athlete should be allowed to make money off their name. Asked about the ongoing Manziel investigation, Peterson said Thursday, “The universities are making a lot of money off of student-athletes in general. So, yeah, he should be able to make money. I think if you are in a position where to where people want to pay you for your autographs or signatures, then you should be able to do that.” HANDED AN OPPORTUNITY: FLORIDA GIVES ONE-HANDED HOOPSTER SHOT Alpharetta, GA high school basketball star Zach Hodskins was born without the lower half of his left arm, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming a star player and, according to one recruiting site, among the top prospects at the ScoutsFocus All-American Camp in Charlottesville, VA in June. Impressive as all that might seem, Florida coach Billy Donovan offered Hodskins a spot as a preferred walk-on, an opportunity that does not include a scholarship, but it does offer a chance to earn one later. But it doesn’t end there: both Alabama-Birmingham and Birmingham Southern are mulling full scholarship offers. NOTHIN’ TO LOSE: ROCKERS KISS HELP BRING ARENA FOOTBALL TO L.A. They’re known for putting their name on everything from toilet paper to, well, you name it, so it should not come as a surprise that the Arena Football League announced Thursday it was awarding an expansion team to a group of investors that include Kiss band members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. The team will be called the LA Kiss (though Destroyers may have been more appropriate), and they will begin playing in March at the Honda center in Anaheim. Flame and blood-spitting bassist/singer Simmons said in a statement: “As a fast-paced, high-action band, this partnership with the AFL was an obvious fit for us. Attending an LA Kiss game in 2014 will be similar to a live Kiss show, with thrilling, heart-pounding action.”
