Spread the word. This important piece of Philippine and American history should be saved. On May 1, the USS Olympia opened fire on the Spanish Navy in Manila Bay, marking the end of the Spanish colonial control of the Philippines. "Admiral George Dewey spoke into a brass communication tube “You may fire when ready Gridley.” With those words the Olympia and the fleet she led, commenced to decimate the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay. It would prove to be the tipping point on the United States emergence as a world power and ended over 300 years of Spanish Colonial rule of the Phillipines." {mareislandmuseum.org/about/ships/uss-olympia/} Now the ship, still afloat, the only one from that era still in existence, may soon be scrapped or sunk. Two organizations are trying to save her -- one in South Carolina and the Mare Island Museum, Vallejo, California.
