Sri Ramana Maharshi occasionally used the word turyatita. For example: When the individual merges in the Supreme, it is called the turyatita. . . . The clear-sighted yogi abides only in turiya, and the highest yogi remains in turyatita alone. The three states [waking, dreaming, deep sleep] alternate involuntarily for the average man. The last two (turiya and turyatita) are, however, the results of practice and form clear aids to liberation. (Talks with Ramana Maharshi p. 474-5) Does anyone know the origins of the term turyatita, sometimes spelled turiyatita? I know it appears in some of the minor Upanishads, including the Mandala Brahmana Upanishad, the Para-Brahma Upanishad, and the Nirvapaprakarapa Upanishad. But I am wondering whether anyone knows when it was first used or when these minor Upanishads are thought to have been written.
