Srinagar, June 16: What could be routine for police Monday proved costly for two of its lower-rung officials when Chief Minister Omer Abdullah personally saw them going bullish on people not once but twice. Driving to Srinagar International Airport from Gupkar home, Omer this morning stopped his sedan at least twice only to inquire about the credentials of the accused cops, who were instantly placed under suspension and stripped off their insignia. Witnesses said as Chief Minister’s cavalcade reached Lal Mandi in south City, he saw an Assistant Sub Inspector(ASI) slapping a mini bus driver. The speeding cavalcade came to halt as Omer applied breaks on the SUV he drove. The Chief Minister beckoned the accused cop towards him. The ASI came running presumably believing that he would be hailed for facilitating “hassle-free VIP movement”. But to his surprise, the CM who rolled down his front window asked how could the cop physically abuse anyone. Witnesses said before the police official would utter a word, there was another query. “What is your name and Belt No?” By now some bystanders could be seen watching from a distance as the commandoes of Special Protection Group fenced the CM’s vehicle in Z- Plus security. Sources added that CM phoned someone complaining about the incident. Within moments, he left the spot heading for flight to Jammu. But as the cavalcade reached Barzulla, a mile away, it was a similar scene, again. Witnesses said this time Omer Abdullah, whose billboard campaign on “My hand holding of youth is beyond political motives” remained much-debated in the past years of crackdown on stone- pelters, saw a Sub-Inspector of police thrashing a scooterist. This time Omer is believed to have lost his cool. Donning a white shirt and grey trousers with goggles resting on his face, he got down from the greenish Land Cruiser to rescue the rider. “For whatever reasons, but you cannot misuse your position,” witnesses quoted CM as having told the cop. The next was like the Lal Mandi incident. “Why should you beat him? What’s your full name? What’s your belt number” the CM, who is also the Home Minister, continued with his rapid fire of queries. His presence in support of some “victimized civilian” attracted attention of bystanders, who rushed in to catch the curious glimpses. But not talking to anyone, CM left the spot driving straight to the tarmac for flight to the winter capital. Back at Barzulla some bystanders gossiped: “It is a part of bounce-back introspection past 3/0 defeat in the Parliament Elections.” Others said: “He is personally good at heart.” By the time Omer reached Jammu, the two accused were placed under suspension. Official records from the office of Superintendent of Police south City, Imtiyaz Ismail Parray confirmed the development. “SI Muhammad Yasin (No 510/S) of PS Sadder Srinagar and ASI Mushtaq Ahmed(No 915/S) of PS Raj Bagh are placed under suspension for their unwarranted conduct exhibited while performing their duties today,” reads the copy of the order issued vide No SPS/ESTT/ A-012014/2829-33 dated June 16, 2014. “They will report to DPL Srinagar immediately and deposit all uniform articles issued to them. They are entitled to draw substance allowance during the period of their suspension as admissible unde
