St. Louis Renaissance Faire Auditions! Open auditions for the 16th annual St. Louis Renaissance Faire will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at the Faire site, Rotary Park, 2577 West Meyer Road, Wentzville, beginning at 10 a.m. Auditions will be first come, first served, and conclude when all roles are filled or the pool of applicants is exhausted. The St. Louis Renaissance Faire, which features hundreds of costumed characters, performers, and merchants, recreates a romanticized version of the historic 16th Century Renaissance village of Lyon, France. The Faire is an interactive, family-friendly, theatrical entertainment event which begins on the third Saturday in May and continues for four weekends including Memorial Day. Dates for the 2014 season are May 17-18, 24-26, 31-June 1, and June 7-8. The Faire is open to our guests from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Faire “work day” for most cast will be 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Cast positions are volunteer, however all performers will be contracted. The majority of cast will be expected to commit to performing each day the Faire is open. However, for performers who cannot commit to the full run of the Faire, there are a limited number of partial-run opportunities for Themed Weekend roles and Front Gate. The scenario theme for 2014 is “The Real Game of Thrones!” The year is 1520, when Francois is a young king and positioning for greater influence on the European political stage. Lyon at this time is a thriving cosmopolitan city; a center for trade, commerce, banking, and a well-known publishing center. There is plenty of opportunity for intrigue, mayhem, and mirth as the French, English, Spanish, and Italians all vie for political alliances and allegiances, all under the watchful eyes of the Vatican’s emissaries. Chivalry, Romance, and Nobility are alive and well and honored in Lyon, but the fun and frivolity of a Faire Day rules supreme. We are entertainers first and re-enactors second. Our primary goal is to provide a satisfying patron experience through proactive interaction in a historical setting. Our guests are our first and last order of business as they are our patrons in the most traditional sense of the word. The casting list follows: Lane Characters These performers will positively and proactively interact with patrons in the lanes of the Faire to provide an interactive, theatrical experience for our guests. The following list is a generalized list. Other characters will be considered based on a strong audition. Minimum age 16. • Town Crier • Lord Mayor and Wife • Master of the Revels • Court Musicians • Village Dancers • Bookbinder • Young Shakespeare • Dandy and his Valet or Second • Cavaliers or Musketeers • Knight and his Lady or Squire • Barbarian and his Amazon(ish) Lady • Robin Hood and Maid Marian, or Little John, or Friar Tuck • Sturdy Beggars • Courtesans/Vamps/Ladies-of-the-Night • Jester • Pirate King and Court • Washer-Women • Preacher and Acolyte/Apprentice • Mother Superior • Sisters of Mercy • Knight Instructor • Seamstress • Sheriff • Tax Collector • Jailer • Executioner • Prisoner • Banker • Brewer • Baker • Leper • Alchemist • Grave Digger • Rag Collector/Merchant • Dung Dealer • King’s Herald • Sheep Herder • Playwright/Poet • Inventor • Mime • Village Cassanova • Merry Widow • Bickering Couple • Matchmaker • Gypsy King and Attendant(s) • Troupe of Traveling Players • Fairy Queen or King • Finder of Lost Things • Hag Who Thinks She’s a Beauty • Barber/Surgeon • Milkmaid • Rat Catcher • Bumbling Wizard • Witch • Old Lost Knight • OR, bring a better, developed character or character-in-development to audition who may have graced the lanes of Lyon during the Renaissance. To create a greater theatrical experience for our guests, “historical” lane characters need not be limited to being their actual age (living or dead) in 1520. The goal is to bring our patrons the zest of the era! Stage Managers – (12 positions) Stage Managers will work assigned stages at St. Louis, Joan of Arc, Friendship, Marco Polo, Troll, Scots, Knight’s Pub, Wharf, the Joust (2), and roving Lane (2), and will also oversee area lane characters and lane acts. Stage Managers will work directly with the Entertainment Director to facilitate Stage and Lane act success. (May work with Town Criers, TBD) Joust Opportunities - These positions will have no Faire day responsibilities outside of promoting and supporting the Joust and other tilt yard events. • Squires – to work with the Noble Cause jousters • Cheerleaders – loud, boisterous and colorful characters, 1 per bleacher or section, to lead patrons in cheering for their Joust champion. Must demonstrate a cheer at audition. [The following cast opportunities do not require full-run commitments; however, those who are willing to commit to the full run of the Faire will be given first preference for these positions. These are excellent opportunities for participants who live at some distance from the St. Louis metro area.] Themed Weekends - Theme Specific Characters each weekend to enhance Lane interaction and promote, participate in, and MC theme weekend activities (e.g., games, contests and performances). Potential themed weekend roles may include Golden-Age Pirates, characters from Monty Python’s “Holy Grail”, kilted Celts, Fairy Tale characters, or other roles as the themes dictate. Front Gate Cast - Seeking high-energy, extroverted full- or partial-run performers who are excited by the opportunity to welcome patrons to Lyon. Orange - Want to support the Faire but you’re not really the “dress up and interact” type? We have several openings for full- and partial- run volunteers in various support roles, including grounds keeping, trash removal, water/ice.
