John 13:34 Meditation In Restoring Your Spiritual Passion, Gordon MacDonald cites a story from Henri Nouwen of an actor who noticed the hypocrisy of his fellow actors and actresses during a particular play. While rehearsing the most moving scenes of love, tenderness, and intimacy, the performers were so jealous of each other and so apprehensive of their chances of succeeding that the back stage was one of hatred, harshness, and mutual suspicion. Those who kissed each other on the stage were tempted to hit each other behind it, and those who displayed deep love before an audience felt nothing but hostile rivalry as soon as the footlights were dimmed. It can be this way on the stage of life, too, especially within Christian churches—but it should not be. Today’s verse records some of the last words spoken by Jesus before His crucifixion, and one of His obvious priorities was love amongst His disciples. Are you envious of a brother or sister in Christ? Don’t let jealousy or division undermine the Lord’s desire for you. Seek restoration of the relationship, forgive, and display genuine love to all who are watching. Prayer Lord, I ask You to allow authentic love to come from my life. Speak to me about any relationship I have with another Christian that needs to be restored. Let Your love flow! Amen.
