Stages of music appreciation: The ignorant appreciator, judgemental and unaware of your judgements. I like what I like. I dont like Rap. I dont like Country. I dont like Baroque.; then The Anthropologist: you listen to a piece of music in the context of the culture and intellectual history of its creation. Not a visceral appreciation, but an understanding. You have started to become suspicious of your spontaneous judgements. I listen until I understand. Then one day it occurs to you that all musical experience is the response of a universal or at least shared-human nervous system -- you can hear the commonality between the music goals of different time periods, different cultures. At this point, you can hear traffic noise as music, waterfalls, squeaky refrigerators, the conversations surrounding you on the bus are lyrics. You can hear the music in silence. You are a simple appreciator.
