Star Trek To Boldly Return To TV Screens? Star Trek Into Darkness Producer Bob Orci has told Sky News a new TV series could be in the works. The co-writer of the two recent films says he recently met CBS with a view to bringing the 47-year-old franchise back to the small screen. When pressed on the issue by Sky News, Mr Orci simply said: Watch this space. The last television incarnation, Star Trek: Enterprise, was cancelled in 2005 after tumbling ratings, bringing an end to six different versions of the show - the Original Series, an Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The sci-fi franchise was rescued soon after by JJ Abrams, whose 2009 and 2013 films, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, grossed close to $1bn. The success of the two movies revived hope among fans that the programme could return to what many see as its natural home, television. However, at the end of last month Abrams said a TV series was unlikely: What I’ve been told from the powers that be [at CBS] is that they’re not interested, he said to Collider. Star Trek is the most popular science fiction franchise of all time, spanning the six television series and 12 films. The 13th film is expected to be released in 2016, in time for Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. But fans will now hope to see the continuing voyages of the star ship Enterprise on the small screen sooner than that.
