Star of silent films and Academy Award nominee Lillian Gish was born on this day in 1893. She stared in a number of D.W. Griffith silent films including the highest grossing film of the silent age, Birth of a Nation (1915), and Way Down East (1920). With the advent of talkies she starred in Duel in the Sun (1946), for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination, and Night of the Hunter (1955). Her final film appearance was opposite Bette Davis in the 1987 film The Whales of August. In 1971 she was awarded the Academy Honorary Award for superlative artistry and for distinguished contribution to the progress of motion pictures.
