Starting a new thread here. See previous wall post with article about Dones... — My New Years resolution (I know Im early) is to start blogging about my journey. Facebook is a hard place to discuss these complicated matters at length. But, I suppose its only fair that I try to explain myself since I brought it and some of you have asked... In this particular case, I just saw that article about church today and I resonated deeply with the Done idea. In retrospect, it is ironic that what Scott said is true... The article is basically an ad for an evangelical book, and Ive become an unwitting marketer for it! Ah well... So... Why am I Done? Not to oversimplify, but I guess it boils down to, I just want to live! What does that mean? It means I want to enjoy my family. I want to experience the goodness all around us. Id like to help others like I, and our family have been so graciously helped. Id like to eliminate extra stuff from my calendar (like going to church) so I can catch up on sleep and truly enjoy a period of rest. That might possibly help me be a better husband--more than reading 12 steps to a better marriage. Id love to tell my kids stories about Jesus at the dinner table, and Id rather not take them to a Sunday school class... Especially because they already go to class nearly everyday of their lives. Personally, I dont want to go and sit and listen to someone speak at me about what the bible says for 30 to 50 minutes. Yes, I have heard it all, and I dont think thats arrogant to say. Id like to become better friends with people who are not like me, instead of always hanging out with people who believe as I believe. Our culture woos us into the corner with ourselves where we become immersed in people and media that reinforce what we already believe. Kind of like... churches! Instead, Id like to find people with unfamiliar (to me), even dissonant ideas and learn about and from them. With the exception of... ... I would like to avoid the pettiness of certain theological arguments (okay, MOST theological arguments) and focus on what God is doing now... today... Id like to take real people and their lives as seriously as we take the words of Scripture. In my experience, people dedicated to church regularly put Scripture before people. I certainly have done that many times before. Thats because so many people make God and the bible out to be the same thing. They simply are not. Lets see... I personally dont cuss all that often--not for moral reasons but because I like the impact of a good swear word that is artfully and strategically spoken. That cant happen if every other word is [insert your favorite bad word]. But I digress. My point is, Id like to be with people who are perfectly comfortable swearing like sailors... or not. It should be a non issue. (Most people in churches dont like cussing, or they do but they feel compelled to hide it for some reason.) That last point may seem less important, but it speaks to the larger issues of authenticity, embracing of the other, and avoiding legalism and false morality. There is SO much more, to share, but most people have not read even this far anyway! See what I mean about blogging? #dones #church
