Starting points for your letter OR email regarding the Highett CSIRO site:: Pick some ideas under each sub-heading (below). Use them directly or edit them according to your personal sentiments. […but don’t include the text of the sub-headings below (Shown in italics/colour ) in your letter/email. ] Choose the Politician(s) to contact from the list on the last page (below). Use one of the following as a Main Heading (or Subject in an email) Highett Grassy Woodland The CSIRO site in Highett Salutation: Dear […Name of Politician…] Choose one of the paragraphs below as your Introduction: As a local resident, I feel strongly about the lack of open space in Highett where I can be amongst nature by myself or with others. I want the CSIRO site to have a normal park and a natural area at the Highett Grassy Woodland. I am a resident of [suburb] and am passionate about conserving the Highett Grassy Woodland on the CSIRO site and restoring it to what it was in the past. I recently attended a public meeting in Highett concerning the preservation of the “Highett Grassy Woodland”. As well as saving this important area, I believe there is an overwhelming need for additional open space in Highett. There is a fantastic opportunity at the CSIRO site to create something different, unique and valuable. I am from [suburb] and would love to have the Woodland as a place I can walk, jog or cycle from my home. Then any of the paragraphs below on ‘How I would use the Highett Grassy Woodland’: Like others, I get pleasure from natural open spaces in many different ways. I just like to just sit and enjoy the place or think. They are places where I can enjoy a stroll with friends. I like to walk in a natural setting and see the flowers, birds, and trees. I want somewhere natural where my children can play and enjoy being with nature. There is nothing like the Highett Grassy Woodland with its Yellow Box and River Red Gum trees, and other local plants, within a hundred kilometres. It can be restored to a botanical wonder that is visited by people like me while others will be proud it exists. Because it is unique the Highett Grassy Woodland should be preserved and restored as natural woodland that will attract birds and animals. It is not just an ordinary park where you can kick a football or throw a ball for a dog. The trees are old and will provide nesting holes for birds and animals. Native grasses and shrubs will grow if room is provided for them. Birds and animals will come to live if it is a quiet, safe tranquil place. I live near the Woodland and would love to have it as part of my neighbourhood that I can see over the houses and visit. Restoring the bare parts of the Highett Grassy Woodland would be great for views from the neighbours, and property prices. Followed by some of the paragraphs below re ‘Thinking about the future’: I am concerned about the future of this area even if I am not here. It’s about my quality of life and that of future generations. As more houses and people move into closely built apartments and our local roads become increasingly busy, open space will be more essential than ever before. The clear air of 3 hectares of ancient grassy woodland would help both wildlife and flora. We know contact with nature is important to the sense of well-being of people both old and young. We must preserve our natural heritage. In 2004 the Federal Government committed to preserving at least some of the Highett Grassy Woodland in the longer term. Regeneration since then has produced some great results. Clearly much more is possible with the presence of plants still in the soil as seed. The whole 3 hectares shown in aerial photos around 1940 could and should be restored as a legacy for future generations. The CSIRO may have damaged some of it but other areas just need some good management of the vegetation. You may like to include ‘Other Policy issues’, listed below: I support the Bayside City Council in demanding 4 hectares of open space on the CSIRO site. I welcome Kingston Council’s support for Bayside City Council’s campaign on the Highett Grassy Woodland. One additional hectare of community open space on the CSIRO site is essential as a place for more active recreation like kicking a footie. It can only help our quality of life and that of future residents of Highett. I want only a few paths through the Highett Grassy Woodland. There could be picnic tables, a fitness trail and bike routes through the Grassy Woodland but that is far as it should go. More would destroy the peace of the area. Ideas about putting a road, even a bus route, through the Highett Grassy Woodland area are appalling. Finish your letter with any of these final paragraphs about ‘What I want’: I just want the Woodland to be preserved for me, others and future generations.. All sorts of politicians have agreed it should be saved. I ask you and them to save enough of the Highett Grassy Woodland to make it a wonderful and peaceful place to go now, and forever. The Commonwealth took over this land during World War Two with little compensation by today’s standards. The Grassy Woodland was in 1953, and for decades after, nearly untouched. The Federal Government must recognise this and agree to restore and return it to the community, with the State Government playing its part. The Council, many politicians and the community are aware of the importance to have this natural resource preserved in perpetuity. Please save the Highett Grassy Woodland. Finally… (something like the following…) Please reassure me that you will do your utmost to ensure the Highett Grassy Woodland will be protected and restored as a gift to present and future generations. I look forward to your reply and commitments. Yours sincerely / Kind regards…… Please ensure that you include your Name and Address Name: Address: Choose the Politician(s) to contact.
