Starting to do a case of the month for my website/facebook page. Starting out with my favorite case of all time. February 2014 Case of the Month A patient presents into the office complaining of pain going down the leg. She reports that pain has been bothering her for the past two years. She reports that she has seen at least multiple practitioners for her complaint and that she is growing disgruntled as they continue to diagnose her with sciatica and tell her to take more Tylenol. It seems accurate to diagnose her with sciatica (a pinched nerve going down the back of her leg). Nonetheless, an exam was conducted in which some tests were consistent with classic sciatica, whereas others were not as consistent. Because of this inconsistency, x rays were ordered where it was revealed that the patient had a secondary cancer in the gluteal bone (ischial tuberosity) that had eaten away enough of the bone that the bone was actually breaking causing gluteal pain and pain down the leg during any thigh flexion (walking, stair stepping, etc.). This patient was appropriately referred out and never seen again as a chiropractic patient. Both her primary and secondary cancer was found timely enough that she was able to make a full recovery. She came into the office a year later with a Christmas gift package and said Thanks for saving my life. Although this patient was never really seen as a chiropractic patient, this is my favorite case of the month. A chiropractor can successfully treat many different conditions, but low back pain is the Chiropractors wheel house. Whenever experiencing low back pain, a chiropractic visit should be at the top of the treatment option list as chiropractors are the gateway physicians most readily prepared to diagnose and treat low back pain whether or not the patients condition makes them a good candidate for chiropractic care.
