State Fair means fall is coming. It was a hard year for gardening---Squaw Creek flooded it--dear and rabbits eat it. I did not know how many vegetables I would have to exhibit. I took about 20 items---not expecting any ribbons. Well I got 2 blue!!! and about 6 or 8 red, white, and pink. I also received the Polk County Master Gardeners Award for outstanding Heirloom Tomatoes. A sign is posted above my tomatoes with the award and a Congratulations to John Anderson of Ames. Black Plum tomato is a Heirloom from Russia and was brought over here 100 years ago. It has a nice fruity flavor ---Good to eat raw or in salsa, or Italian sauce. Now the Kicker---it is the size of an egg-dark bronze/brown with a greenish top. They are located in the NW corner of the Ag building--You can just look at the sign if you want. Beta Sigs---I can not wait to feed you all the different looking tomatoes----it was also a good year for zucchini, rutabagas, turnips and onions. Looking forward to start cooking this Friday.
