"State Sen. Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Kinnaird (D-NC) resigned her seat in the North Carolina Senate Monday so that she can work on a project to register voters and help ensure that people get proper ID so they can vote despite the state’s strict new voter suppression laws. Kinnaird resigned after nine terms because the 81-year-old Democrat (one of only 17 Democrats in the 50-member state Senate) , lawyer and former mayor, is fed up with the direction her state is headed. So she’s leaving the legislature to do something about it. In particular, she plans to work with a grassroots advocacy to undermine Republican efforts in North Carolina to suppress the vote."
