State of Nevada – #carpenter1fire Update Thursday July 11, 2013 21:30 Carpenter 1 Fire, Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, Carpenter Canyon, Clark County. A Fire Assistance Grant (FMAG) was issued for the state of Nevada for firefighting efforts of the Carpenter 1 Fire on July 5, 2013. A community meeting will be held Friday, July 12, at 5:30 p.m. in Pahrump, at a location to be determined. For additional information please visit: inciweb.org/incident/3481/ Incident Commander: Rich Harvey (Great Basin Type I Incident Management Team). Personnel: 1,386 Acres burned: 27,968 Containment: 43% Estimated containment date: 7/19/13 Estimated suppression costs: 11,990,971 Structures: 500 Threatened, 6 Destroyed (Prospect Ranch area) Safety: One minor injury reported to date. Update: The Red Rock loop has been reopened to all traffic. Heavy rain fell in the western section of the fire near the Spring Mountains, moderating fire activity. Other areas of the fire received light rain. The increased moisture and cloud cover allowed firefighters to build line directly on the fire edge. Crews should be able to secure most of the southern perimeter over the next few days. The Kyle Canyon section of the fire is mostly secure, but scattered heat was detected in this area, with more intense heat east of Rainbow subdivision, where fire continues to back down the mountain toward Kyle Canyon Road. Hotshot crews continued to build line and mop up along the fire edge. Helicopters will shuttle handcrews further up the west flank of the fire as weather conditions allow. Structure Protection continues along Kyle Canyon Road and has been successful. Fire continues to rollout from the cliffs above Kyle Canyon Rd and is still a threat. Direct line construction and mop up is occurring along the northern edge as conditions allow. Mop up is being conducted around Harris and Prospect Ranches. Scouting is being conducted along the southeastern edge looking for fuel breaks and favorable terrain in order to plan for the line construction due to lack of access. Falling trees and rolling debris remain a concern. Acres by ownership: USFS 27,240; BLM 639, Private 89. 1 commercial building and 5 out buildings were destroyed at Prospect Ranch on 7/9/13 Issues / Concerns / Considerations: CenturyLink has confirmed that at least 6000’ of their communications line has been destroyed by the fire in the Kyle canyon Area. Sections of the destroyed line are both above and below ground. This is the only communication line heading into Kyle canyon, and has resulted in severing both land and cellular communications in the area (since the cell towers use the land line to tie in communications). Rain and high humidity today helped firefighting efforts. Kyle Canyon received ½” of rain, with other fire areas receiving 1/10” to ¼” of rain. Continued rain showers are expected tomorrow (7/12/13), but with somewhat warmer conditions and less cloud cover. Tomorrow’s humidity is expected to be up to 70%, and will have winds of 8-12mph with gusts up to 20mph. Tomorrow’s burning conditions are expected to be similar to today, however the expected increase in sunshine may result in more aggressive behavior.
